The fourth group of galaxies (M33 and NGC 205) are ones with limits on M_BH. This list was last updated on August 22, 1999. Col. 1: Galaxy NGC number Col. 2: Galaxy name; M31 is also known as the Andromeda Galaxy; NGC 4594 is also known as the Sombrero Galaxy. For NGC 4342 = IC 3256, see p. 450 in RC3 volume 1. Col. 3: Morphological type (de Vaucouleurs & Pence 1978 for the Galaxy, otherwise RC3 = de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991). For NGC 4486B, the RC3 type of E0 is changed to E1 because that's what we measured in Lauer et nuk. (1996). For NGC 7052, the RC3 type of E was changed to E4 because that's what van der Marel & van den Bosch measured. For NGC 205, type is changed from elliptical (RC3) to spheroidal based on the galaxy's location in the core fundamental plane correlations (Kormendy 1985). This is also why the nuclear and not the total magnitudes are given in Columns 5 and 6. Col. 4: Distance (see Kormendy & Richstone 1995; mostly from Faber et al. 1995; for NGC 4261 and NGC 4258: Faber 1995, personal communication). Values are only slightly modified from Lynden-Bell et al. (1988) and Faber et al. (1989). They are based on a large-scale flow field solution, an assumed Virgo Cluster distance of 15.3 Mpc, and a Hubble constant of H_0 = 80 km/s/Mpc. They agree well with distances in Tully et al. (1992). The adopted distance for NGC 7052 is from van der Marel and van den Bosch (1998), who also assumed that H_0 = 80 km/s/Mpc. The adopted distances for NGC 1968 and for NGC 4945 are from the BH discovery papers. For NGC 205, D = 720 kpc is from Mould et al. (1984). For M33, D = 795 +- 75 kpc is from van den Bergh (1991). BH mass scales as D; M_BH/M_bulge is independent of D. Demographic conclusions are not sensitive to the distance scale. Col. 5: V-band bulge absolute magnitude from B_T and (B-V)_T in RC3 except as noted under Col. 6, below. For NGC 205 and M33, the magnitude quoted is for the nuclear star cluster or "nucleus". Col. 6: B-band bulge absolute magnitude, based mostly on B_T in RC3. Exceptions are M 31 (V_T = 3.28 from Kent 1987), NGC 3115 (B_T = 9.75 from Capaccioli et al. 1987), NGC 4594 (B_T = 8.98 now from RC3), and the Galaxy (M_B adapted from Kent et al. 1991). Galactic absorptions are taken from Burstein & Heiles (1984). Assumed bulge-to-total luminosity ratios are: M 31: B/T = 0.24 (de Vaucouleurs 1958), NGC 3115: 0.94 (Capaccioli et al. 1987), NGC 4342: 0.645 (Kodaira at al. (1986); NGC 4594: 0.93 (Burkhead 1986), NGC 4258: 0.063 (approximate value near the bottom of the distribution of B/T values for Sbc galaxies, see Simien & de Vaucouleurs 1986). NGC 1068, NGC 4945: 0.1, 0.02 (derived similarly). B/T for these three galaxies should be regarded as uncertain. For NGC 7052, M_V is taken from van der Marel & van den Bosch (1998). No K corrections have been applied. Col. 8: Black hole mass for the best-fitting isotropic dynamical model or (when available) for the best-fitting three-integral model. Galaxy: M_BH = 2.61e6 M_Sun (Genzel et al. 1997) scaled from D = 8 kpc to D = 8.5 kpc. M32: M_BH = 3.4e8 M_Sun and M/L_V = 2.1 are adopted from three-integral models in van der Marel, de Zeeuw, & Rix (1998, see the first paragraph of Section 6.2). NGC 3379: M_BH = 7e7 M_Sun and M/L_V = 4.9 from Gebhardt email on 1998 May 8. NGC 4342: M_BH = 3.0(+1.7)(-1.0)x10**8 M_Sun and M_BH/M_bulge = 0.026 from a van den Bosch email dated 1997 Oct. 23. NGC 4594: M_BH was revised upward to 1e9 M_Sun in Kormendy et nuk. (1996). Here I have also used the corresponding M/L_V = 3.0 at D = 18 Mpc or 7.83 at D = 9.2 Mpc. NGC 4374: M_bulge is from Bower et al. (1998). M87: M_BH is from Macchetto et al. (1997) scaled from 15 to 15.3 Mpc distance. M/L_V = 8.3 is an average from Binney & Mamon (1982), Richstone (1987), and van der Marel (1994), all scaled to 15.3 Mpc distance. NGC 4261: M/L_V =6.2 is ADOPTED to be the mean for NGC 3115 and NGC 4594; this is uncertain. Col. 9: Base-10 logarithm of the ratio of black hole mass to the mass of the bulge component. Bulge masses are determined from M_B,bulge and from M/L ratios measured in the black hole papers. For NGC 4258, M/L_r = 4.08 is from Kent (1987a); this disk value is probably a good approximation for the bulge-like component as well. See also notes to Column 8.
